Planning a Lithuania trip

Lithuania transport: routes, tickets and ferry connections

Choose the route first, then buy the ticket for a specific departure. City tickets, intercity tickets and the Smiltynė ferry are separate purchases.

Compare the main visitor routes

The table compares useful modes and arrival points, rather than implying that every service takes the same time. Vilnius-Kaunas stopping trains average about 1 hour 20 minutes in the ministry’s comparison; individual express and engineering-work timings differ. For longer routes, compare the actual arrival time and changes in the two official booking searches.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways.

Find the right station

Vilnius railway station: Geležinkelio g. 16; bus station: Sodų g. 22, nearby. Kaunas railway station: M. K. Čiurlionio g. 16; bus station: Vytauto pr. 24. Klaipėda railway station: Priestočio g. 1; bus station: Butkų Juzės g. 9. The Klaipėda stations are near each other, but the Old Ferry Terminal is a separate destination. Allow about 20-30 minutes on foot from that station area to North Horn, or use a taxi with luggage.

Buy and use an intercity ticket

  • Train: open LTG Link, enter departure, arrival, travel date and passengers. Choose the departure and class, then any seat or bicycle option offered. Pay, save the QR ticket offline and carry the identity or discount document linked to it. The airport train has no seat reservation.
  • Coach: search Autobusų bilietai by town and date, read the actual boarding stop and operator, then buy the selected service. Save the ticket and arrive before departure to find the platform and load luggage. A place name in a search result is not proof that the bus uses the town’s main station.

City tickets: activate, do not just buy

Vilnius: tap one contactless bank card or device at the validator to buy and automatically activate one €1.25, 60-minute adult ticket. One card buys one passenger ticket; use the same card or device for inspection. For a €1, 30-minute ticket or a €7.50/€13.50 day pass, buy through the JUDU app or a loaded JUDU/Vilniečio card and activate the ticket. Buying it in the app without activating it is not enough. Transfers are allowed inside the ticket’s validity; the pass runs 24 or 72 hours from activation.

Kaunas: load the Žiogas app/card. In the app, scan or enter the vehicle code and confirm the ticket; tap a physical card at the validator. Validate again on a transfer. The app/card permits one free transfer within 30 minutes. Bank-card tickets are a different product; do not assume they carry that transfer rule. Klaipėda: use the operator’s e.Ticket portal/app to buy a QR ticket or top up a transport card, then validate on boarding. A Vilnius ticket is not valid in either city.

Luggage, bicycles and assistance

LTG Link’s current general rules allow hand luggage totalling up to 36 kg, with length + width + height no more than 200 cm; keep it off seats and passageways. A bicycle needs the train’s bicycle option and space, not a luggage assumption. Coach luggage rules belong to the carrier shown on your ticket; ask it about a large case, bicycle or mobility aid before paying.

Request LTG Link assistance at least 24 hours ahead through booking or +370 700 55111; send route, date, stations, wheelchair needs and a contact number. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure unless staff agree another time. For a TOKS coach, contact +370 611 13426 or budintis@toks.lt before buying to confirm a suitable place on that specific service. A station ramp does not establish that the vehicle is accessible.

Klaipėda - ferry - Smiltynė - Nida

  • On foot or by bicycle, use the Old Ferry Terminal at Ernesto Galvanausko bulv. 1, North Horn. Buy a €1.70 return passenger ticket online or at the terminal; keep it for the return. It also covers a passenger with a bicycle. The ferry crosses the lagoon to Smiltynė, not all the way to Nida.
  • At Smiltynė, board the Nida bus at the “Smiltynė” stop serving the old crossing. Buy separately on the bus by cash/card, at Nida station or through Autobusų bilietai. October fare: €8 one way to Nida, €3 to Juodkrantė; a bicycle is €10 extra on the bus. Do not walk from the new vehicle landing expecting the same bus connection.
  • For 1-31 October 2026, a usable bus pair is Smiltynė 09:10 - Nida 10:10 and Nida 16:00 - Smiltynė 17:05. Choose a ferry that reaches Smiltynė before 09:10 and leave a boarding margin. On return, take a ferry after 17:05. This is a bus connection example, not a guaranteed through ticket; other months use a different schedule.
  • Drivers use the New Ferry Terminal, Nemuno g. 8. A standard M1 passenger car return is €23.20, with its passengers included. The Neringa vehicle entry charge at Alksnynė is separate from the ferry ticket, as are parking charges. Compare a through coach to Nida if you prefer not to manage separate crossings; read its fare conditions for what is included.
