Visit durations and walking times are planning estimates. Timetables and admission rules come from the linked operators.
Plan your visit
Allow 4-5 hours in Trakai for the castle, lunch and the station walks. A full day adds one outer attraction, with its own transport.
Both railway and bus stations lie south of the castle. The mapped railway-station route to the castle is about 3.1 km; allow roughly 50-60 minutes each way. From the bus station, allow about 35-40 minutes for the approximately 2.5 km walk. Times depend on pace and stops.
What to see
Trakai Island Castle
Cross the bridges for the courtyard, ducal palace history and casemate displays of applied art, furniture, coins and weapons. Allow 1.5-2 hours inside. The museum explains both the castle and its restoration; the lakeside exterior is only part of the visit.
Official visitor informationKaraimų Street
Wooden houses and the Karaim heritage museum give context to the community associated with Trakai. Allow 30-45 minutes on the street, plus a museum visit if open. The kenesa is a place of worship, so do not assume casual interior access.
Official visitor informationUžutrakis
The manor and landscaped park stand across Lake Galvė, with views back towards the castle. Allow 1.5-2 hours for a park-led visit; interior exhibitions have their own arrangements. It is a road journey around the lake, not a walk across the castle bridges.
Official visitor informationVarnikai trail
A 3.5 km marked circuit crosses woodland, wetland and boardwalk sections. Allow 1.5-2 hours on the trail, plus travel to the start. Slippery boards and uneven forest paths make it a poor substitute for a level promenade.

Station walks and the castle day
From the railway station, head towards the bus station, then continue north along Vytauto and Karaimų streets to the castle bridges. From the bus station, begin on the same northbound route. Distances include the approach to the island; add pauses and queueing to the walking estimates. A taxi to the bridge approach avoids most of the station walk.
In October the castle is open Tuesday-Sunday, 10:00-18:00, with final admission 30 minutes before closing. Start with the castle, have lunch, then walk the lakeside before returning. April-September has a different schedule.
Kibinai stops
Kibinai are filled pastries associated with Karaim cuisine. Senoji Kibininė lists a Trakai restaurant and a bridge-side outlet; Kybynlar is another Karaim-food stop on Karaimų Street. Choose a sit-down lunch or a pastry-and-broth break, allowing 30-60 minutes. Ask which filling is being served rather than assuming every pastry contains lamb.
Half-day or full day
For a half-day, keep to the castle, Karaimų Street and lunch. For a full day, add either Užutrakis by car or a prearranged return taxi, or Varnikai with transport to the trailhead. Do not count the 3.5 km Varnikai circuit as the total distance from the station.
Rain favours the castle and Karaim museum. For limited mobility, use a taxi to the castle approach and enjoy lake views from the mainland; ask the museum which rooms can be reached without stairs. Choose the park’s shorter paths at Užutrakis rather than promising a step-free castle visit.
