Visit durations and walking times are planning estimates. Timetables and admission rules come from the linked operators.
Plan your visit
Allow two full days. The Old Town route takes about 3-4 hours with short stops; a substantial museum visit needs its own time block.
Use JUDU buses and trolleybuses for longer journeys. The central route can be walked without a car; cobbles, slopes and tower stairs affect how much you can cover.
What to see
Cathedral Square and Gediminas Tower
Start among the Lower Castle buildings, then choose the tower for its castle-history displays and Old Town panorama. Allow 30 minutes for the square and 45-60 minutes for the tower, plus the hill approach.
Official visitor informationVilnius University courtyards
Look for the arcaded Grand Courtyard and the observatory façade with zodiac decoration. Allow 30-45 minutes. Roof works change the entrance: approach from Universiteto Street through the Library and Sarbievijus courtyards, rather than the St Johns bell-tower gate.
Official visitor informationPalace of the Grand Dukes
Archaeological remains, excavated objects and reconstructed ceremonial rooms explain court life and the Grand Duchy. Choose this for early history; allow 2-3 hours rather than adding it to a rushed tower stop.
Official visitor informationMuseum of Occupations and Freedom Fights
Documents, resistance displays and the former basement prison explain Soviet repression. This is a demanding history visit, with material about imprisonment and executions; allow 1.5-2 hours and consider whether it suits younger children.
Official visitor informationMO Museum and Užupis
MO offers changing modern Lithuanian art exhibitions in a Daniel Libeskind building: allow 1-2 hours indoors. Užupis is a separate outdoor choice, with riverside art and constitution plaques; allow another hour to wander.
Official visitor informationJapanese Garden on Linkmenų Street
A pond, red bridge, dry garden and walking paths in Šnipiškės. Entry is free; opening hours change with the season.

Access and shorter alternatives
MO: use the regular door beside the revolving entrance on Pylimo Street. Lifts, accessible toilets and seating on every floor are available.
Official accessibility information
Palace of the Grand Dukes: lifts serve all floors. Some archaeological-basement steps use platform lifts that the museum warns may be unsuitable for pushchairs.
Walking route and food stops
Follow Cathedral Square - Pilies Street - the university quarter - Town Hall Square - the Gate of Dawn. Pilies Street is a convenient coffee stop; pause around the Town Hall for lunch. Add St Anne’s Church, Bernardine Garden and Užupis on a separate loop rather than doubling back from the Gate of Dawn.
For a food-led detour, continue towards Halė Market near the station: choose among the stalls that are open rather than expecting a fixed tasting menu. Use the food guide and the 3-day or 7-day itinerary for a longer stay.
Choosing a museum
Choose the Palace for archaeology and court interiors, the Occupations Museum for twentieth-century repression, or MO for modern art. One major museum plus the walking route makes a manageable day; all three deserve a second day.
Rain and shorter walks
In rain, replace the hill and Užupis loop with a museum. For less walking, stay around Cathedral Square and the Lower Castle, with a seated café break. Cobbled courtyards and steep tower access are different from level square visits; ask the chosen museum about the entrance and lift you need.
University access
The university’s notice schedules church-roof works from 7 July 2026 to 31 December 2027. Part of the Grand Courtyard and the gate near the bell tower are affected. Use the Universiteto Street approach; a courtyard visit does not imply access to every teaching room or library interior.
