Basketball: A National Religion

Basketball has a prominent place in Lithuanian sporting and cultural life. National-team tournaments and club fixtures attract attention in cafés, newspapers and everyday conversation. For visitors, a game offers a way to experience that interest directly rather than relying only on a description of its importance.

Lithuania's independent national team won EuroBasket in 1937, 1939 and 2003. The 1947 EuroBasket title belonged to the Soviet Union team, which included Lithuanian players, so it should not be counted as an independent Lithuania title. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Lithuania's first Games after restored independence, the team arrived with almost no funding; the Grateful Dead helped sponsor the famous tie-dyed kit. Lithuania lost to the USA Dream Team in the semifinal, then beat the Unified Team for bronze, a defining moment followed by bronze medals in 1996 and 2000.

Lithuanian NBA Stars

Lithuanian NBA players include Arvydas Sabonis, Šarūnas Marčiulionis and Domantas Sabonis. Arvydas joined the Portland Trail Blazers and entered the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. Marčiulionis signed with an NBA club in 1989. Domantas plays for the Sacramento Kings, as listed in his NBA profile.

Žalgiris Kaunas

BC Žalgiris Kaunas is more than a basketball club - it is a symbol of national pride. Founded in 1944, its name refers to the 1410 Battle of Grunwald, known in Lithuanian as Žalgiris. During the Soviet era, Žalgiris victories over Russian clubs carried deep political meaning. Today the club competes in the EuroLeague, and the Žalgiris Arena in Kaunas - holding 15,000 fans - hosts the club’s home games.

Athletics and Olympic Success

Beyond basketball, Lithuania has produced top-rated athletes across many disciplines. Virgilijus Alekna won Olympic gold in discus in 2000 and 2004. Lithuanian athletes have won medals at every Summer Olympics since 1992. Biathlon, rowing and cycling are also among the sports represented by Lithuanian athletes.

Football and Emerging Sports

The A Lyga (Lithuanian Football League) includes clubs from Vilnius, Kaunas, Šiauliai and other cities. Žalgiris Vilnius and FK Sūduva Marijampolė are among the clubs to look for when checking fixtures. The national team competes in UEFA qualifying. Other sporting options include CrossFit, MMA and esports.
