Visit durations and walking times are planning estimates. Timetables and admission rules come from the linked operators.
Plan your visit
Allow 1.5-2 hours for the Old Town walk and at least half a day for the ferry and museum. Combining both fills a day.
The Old Ferry Terminal serves pedestrians and cyclists; vehicles use the New Ferry Terminal at Nemuno Street 8. A ferry ticket does not include museum admission.
What to see
Theatre Square and Old Town
See the theatre frontage and square, then look for timber-framed buildings around the small Old Town streets. Allow 45-60 minutes; this is a compact street walk rather than a preserved medieval city on the scale of Vilnius.
Official visitor informationCastle Museum and Danė riverfront
Castle-site displays explain the fortified port’s development. The river walk brings you to the moored Meridianas, a useful landmark rather than a general-access ship museum. Allow about an hour for the Castle Museum and 30 minutes by the river.
Official visitor informationLithuanian Sea Museum
The Nerija fort contains aquarium and marine-life displays alongside navigation history. Outside, fishing boats and the fisherman’s farmstead explain working life on the coast. Allow 2-3 hours; some outdoor areas follow seasonal opening arrangements.
Official visitor informationDolphinarium
The dolphin and California sea-lion performance is a timed, separately ticketed visit. Aquarium/museum admission does not cover it. Choose the performance time first and allow a queue and seating buffer; the show is optional when planning a museum day.
Official visitor informationSmiltynė
Forest paths lead across to the Baltic beach, while the lagoon-side route leads north towards the museum. A beach outing and a museum outing use different paths; allow another hour or more for a short forest-and-sea detour.

A complete city-and-museum day
Begin in Theatre Square, explore the Old Town and castle site, then follow the Danė past Meridianas towards the Old Ferry Terminal. Take the pedestrian ferry to Smiltynė. From the landing, the museum is roughly a 2 km walk north: allow 30-40 minutes each way at an ordinary pace. Return to the same landing for the city ferry.
The museum’s October schedule lists the aquarium and exhibitions on Friday-Sunday, 10:30-17:00. A weekday city walk can still work, but should not promise a museum visit on a closed day.
The ferry diversion
Until 30 November 2026, the museum’s arrival notice directs pedestrians through the Memel City complex because the western section of Danė Street is closed. The Old Ferry Terminal remains at North Cape, with the updated address Ernesto Galvanausko Boulevard 1. Follow the signed diversion rather than a map’s shortest riverbank line.

Tickets and a shorter alternative
Buy aquarium/museum admission and a dolphinarium performance ticket separately if you want both; the ferry is a third purchase. Use the museum’s ticket link for the selected date and performance, and its notices for sales interruptions. Do not add Nida to this day: it is a separate journey farther along the Spit.
In heavy rain, choose the Castle Museum on the city side. For less walking, arrange transport from the Smiltynė landing to the museum and back; seasonal shuttles are not a dependable year-round connection. Confirm vehicle access and wheelchair arrangements with the museum and ferry operator.
