Spend two nights in Vilnius for the UNESCO Old Town, take a half-day to Trakai island castle, then head west, Kaunas for modernist architecture, Klaipėda for the seafront and the Curonian Spit dunes, and the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai if you have a car. Five days fits comfortably, seven is plenty, ten lets you add a sodyba sauna weekend in the lakes.
Choose by travel style
Use these shortcuts when you know the kind of trip you want before you know the exact route.
What to book ahead and what can wait
What to book before arrival
Nida or Klaipeda accommodation in high season, a sodyba sauna weekend, rental car days for the Hill of Crosses and lakes, and any small-group tour you would be disappointed to miss.
What can usually wait
Most Vilnius and Kaunas sights, ferry tickets as a foot passenger, local cafes, and many museums outside public holidays.
When a guided tour is useful
A guide helps most with context-heavy places such as Vilnius Old Town, food history, Jewish heritage, Cold War sites and one-day trips with awkward logistics.
When independent travel is better
Choose independent travel for the city-to-city rail corridor, beach time, self-paced museums, and any route where you want long unscheduled stops.
Pick the right trip shape first
Lithuania is compact, but the best route changes a lot depending on whether you have a car and whether the coast matters. Use this before diving into the full list.
3 days: Vilnius + Trakai
Best for a first city break. Stay in Vilnius Old Town or Naujamiestis and treat Trakai as the one easy day trip.
Use the Vilnius itinerary5 to 7 days: add Kaunas and coast
Best overall route. Take Vilnius first, Kaunas second, then Klaipėda or Nida for the Curonian Spit. A car helps after Kaunas.
Plan the coast leg10 days: slow loop + sodyba
Best if nature matters. Add Žemaitija, Aukštaitija lakes, Druskininkai or a sauna weekend instead of rushing every city.
Choose a stay typeTwelve experiences worth building a trip around
Use these twelve stops to build a city, coast or nature itinerary. The list begins in Vilnius, with options for day trips and a longer route.
Wander Vilnius Old Town
Vilnius Historic Centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Start at the Cathedral Square, walk Pilies street to Town Hall, and detour up to Gediminas Tower for a 360° view that takes in baroque domes, the Neris river, and the modern skyline across the water. Allow at least a full day; two if you also want time for the museums.
Open the Vilnius city guideCross into the Republic of Užupis
Užupis is a riverside district in Vilnius that declared itself an "independent artists' republic" in 1997. There is a constitution nailed to a wall, an angel sculpture in the central square, and a concentration of small galleries, courtyards, and restaurants. Cross from the Old Town on foot and leave time for the district’s galleries, courtyards and riverside cafés.
See the 3-day Vilnius itineraryTake the Trakai island-castle day trip
West of Vilnius, the red-brick Trakai castle stands on an island in Lake Galvė. Allow for the outward journey and the walk from the station or bus stop. Combine the castle with a paddle-boat hour on the lake and a stop at one of the Karaim restaurants for hand-folded kibinai pastries.
Read the Trakai day-trip guideSee modernist Kaunas (UNESCO 2023)
Lithuania's second city was the temporary capital between 1919 and 1939, and the streets fill with the bold inter-war modernist architecture from that period. UNESCO listed the Modernist Kaunas urban ensemble in 2023. Walk Laisvės alėja, then visit the Ninth Fort memorial on the city's edge for sobering WWII history.
Open the Kaunas travel guideVisit the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai
A small hill outside Šiauliai where pilgrims and visitors have placed crosses since the nineteenth century. The official district history describes repeated Soviet destruction and the continued erection of new crosses. Easiest with a car or as a stop on a guided tour from Vilnius.
Browse Lithuania toursWalk the Curonian Spit dunes from Nida
The 98 km Curonian Spit separates the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon; its northern part is in Lithuania and its southern part is in Russia. In Nida, combine wooden fishermen’s houses and the Thomas Mann summer cottage with the Parnidis dune and sundial. From Klaipėda, cross to Smiltynė by ferry, then continue towards Nida.
Read the Curonian Spit guideExplore Klaipėda Old Town and the seafront
Klaipėda’s architecture reflects its history as a German-influenced port city. The Old Town is small but characterful, with timber-framed houses, the Annika fountain, and a working ferry terminal that takes you across to Smiltynė for the dolphinarium and beach forest paths.
Open the Klaipėda travel guideEat your way through traditional Lithuanian cuisine
Try cepelinai (potato dumplings stuffed with meat or curd), šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup especially associated with summer), kibinai pastries from Trakai, kepta duona (fried garlic rye bread) and šakotis (a spit-baked tree cake). For a contemporary meal, compare the actual dishes and price of a tasting menu with a traditional main-course restaurant.
Read the Vilnius food guideSoak in a sodyba sauna by a lake
A "sodyba" is a Lithuanian rural homestead, often rented for weekends. The classic combination is a wood-fired sauna, a quick plunge in the lake, herbal tea on the porch, and a slow dinner of smoked fish and home-baked bread. The Aukštaitija lake region in the north-east is the heartland.
Open the Aukštaitija region pageWalk the Anykščiai treetop path
A 300-metre elevated walkway through the pine canopy leads to an observation platform at 34 metres. The narrow-gauge railway and literary museums are separate visits in Anykščiai, not facilities at the treetop-path site. Allow additional travel and visiting time if combining them. The path can be a half-day stop between Vilnius and the lake region.
Find inland Lithuania routesSlow down in Druskininkai
Druskininkai sits on the Nemunas in southern Lithuania. Choose among mineral baths, the indoor Snow Arena, Soviet-era monuments and historical displays at Grūtas Park, and pine-forest walks. Two days allow time for one main activity each day.
Open the Dzūkija region pageSee the Plokštinė Soviet missile base
A decommissioned underground nuclear missile silo, hidden in Žemaitija National Park, that once held R-12 missiles aimed at Western Europe. Now a Cold War museum you can walk through. Pair it with a swim in nearby Lake Plateliai and a meal in Plungė.
Open the Žemaitija region pagePlan a fishing holiday in Lithuania
Lithuania's lake country, rivers, Nemunas Delta and Baltic coast can support very different fishing trips. Start with the exact water, permit and legal equipment before booking a guide, boat or rural stay.

Best time to go
Late May to early September gives more daylight for outdoor visits. July is the main summer season; museum, homestead and seasonal-service opening dates depend on the operator. In December, combine announced Christmas events with museums or a sauna stay. Winter cold and snow vary, so keep an indoor option. November and March can suit a shorter city trip; match outdoor plans to daylight and the weather.
What it costs (per person, per day)
Backpacker: €45-65 (hostel dorm, supermarket meals, public transport). Mid-range: €90-140 (3-star hotel, 1-2 sit-down meals, a paid attraction). Comfortable: €180-280 (4-star Old Town hotel, tasting-menu dinner, a guided tour, occasional taxis). These are planning examples, not a current tariff survey. Compare the same dates and room occupancy; flights, car rental and other extras need separate lines in your budget.
How to get around
Trains and intercity buses connect Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda; LTG Link, Lux Express and Ecolines publish services for specific dates. Choose a departure by its actual journey time and arrival point. For the Hill of Crosses or a rural homestead, add local transport, a car or a tour. For the Curonian Spit, allow the ferry and onward bus, bicycle or car journey. Compare a rental quote for your dates, including insurance and fees, and the fare shown by a ride-booking app.
How long do you need? 3, 5, 7 and 10-day routes
3 days in Vilnius with a Trakai excursion
Best for a city break. You will see the capital well and squeeze in one day-trip.
Day 1: arrive, check in, walk the Old Town from Cathedral Square to Town Hall, dinner near Pilies street. Day 2: Gediminas Tower for the morning view, MO Museum for modern Lithuanian art, lunch in Užupis, evening food tour or tasting-menu dinner. Day 3: half-day to Trakai by train or guided tour, kibinai for lunch by the lake, return to Vilnius for departure.
5-day classic (Vilnius + Kaunas + coast)
Two city stays and a coastal stop, without adding rural detours.
Days 1-2: Vilnius as above. Day 3: train to Kaunas, walk Laisvės alėja, see the Ninth Fort, sleep in Kaunas. Day 4: onward bus or train to Klaipėda, afternoon in the Old Town, evening seafood. Day 5: ferry to Smiltynė, drive or bus to Nida for the dunes, return for evening departure (consider flying home from Palanga rather than back-tracking to Vilnius).
7-day Lithuania loop (recommended)
The version that lets you slow down and adds the country's two most distinctive landscapes.
Days 1-2: Vilnius + Trakai. Day 3: Kaunas (Laisvės alėja, modernist architecture walk). Day 4: drive north to the Hill of Crosses, continue to Klaipėda. Day 5: full day on the Curonian Spit (Nida dunes, fisher villages, Parnidis dune sunset). Day 6: drive east via Žemaitija (Plokštinė missile base or Plateliai lake) to Anykščiai. Day 7: treetop walk, return to Vilnius for departure.
10-day deep dive (cities + nature + sauna)
For travellers who want a proper week-and-a-bit of Lithuania, including a slow weekend in the lake region.
Days 1-7 follow the 7-day loop above. Day 8: drive to the Aukštaitija lake region, check into a sodyba. Day 9: sauna day, lake swim, slow dinner; optional canoe morning. Day 10: return to Vilnius via Anykščiai, allowing time before departure. Druskininkai is a separate southern alternative requiring extra travel, not an on-the-way stop from Aukštaitija. An additional half-day in Šiauliai can include the Bicycle Museum or the History Museum’s film reconstruction of the Battle of Saulė.
Local tips that change your trip
- Tipping 10% in restaurants is generous, not expected. Service is rarely added automatically.
- Check payment methods for a small café, market or rural homestead; carry a practical cash reserve rather than assuming every provider accepts cards.
- Compare the total fare shown by Bolt or another operator before booking. A fixed saving against airport taxis cannot be promised.
- Lithuanian summers can hit 30 °C but evenings are still cool, pack one warm layer even in July.
- Follow any “please wait” sign at a restaurant entrance; if the seating arrangement is unclear, ask a member of staff.
- For Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, compare train and bus departure times, journey lengths and arrival points. LTG Link’s own ticket site is ltglink.lt.
- The Vilnius Old Town is largely pedestrian, drop your bags at the hotel before bringing a car anywhere near it.
- Ask your accommodation or activity provider about a shared language rather than presuming language knowledge from age. A short written request can help with a booking.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to "see Lithuania" in two days. You can see Vilnius in two days, not the country. Five days is the realistic minimum if you want any sense of variety.
- Leaving too little time for the Curonian Spit. A dune walk, Nida’s museums and the ferry connections need their own day rather than a brief stop between city journeys.
- Rejecting November or March automatically. Short daylight favours museums and city visits; plan seasonal activities around their actual opening dates and keep an indoor option.
- Leaving a fixed summer weekend booking until arrival. Reserve earlier when you need a particular Vilnius location, family room, parking space or accessible room, especially around events.
- Underestimating distances if you skip a rental car. The Hill of Crosses, Curonian Spit, and lake-region sodybas are not walkable from train stations.
- Choosing every meal on the same tourist street. Compare actual menus, portions and the total bill in surrounding streets; moving three blocks does not guarantee a fixed discount.
- Treating Lithuania and Russia as the same destination. Lithuania has its own language, history and institutions, and its currency is the euro. Its museums and cultural sites explain both local traditions and the experience of Soviet occupation.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need in Lithuania?
Three days for Vilnius alone, five for Vilnius plus one other city or the coast, seven for a proper loop including the Curonian Spit and the Hill of Crosses. Ten days is ideal if you also want a sodyba weekend.
When is the best time to visit Lithuania?
Late May to early September offers long days for outdoor visits. December can suit Christmas events and museums without guaranteed snow. In November or March, choose activities around daylight, weather and actual opening dates instead of ruling out the entire month.
Is Lithuania expensive?
Costs depend on dates, room occupancy, accommodation, meals and transport. The three budget styles above are planning examples, not a current price survey. Compare equivalent offers and add flights, rental cars and extras separately.
Is Lithuania safe for tourists?
Use normal city precautions: protect valuables in busy places and on public transport, avoid unlit streets and parks at night, and plan outdoor trips for the conditions. The safety guide covers specific risks and emergency contacts.
Do I need to know Russian or Lithuanian?
You do not need to learn Russian or Lithuanian before travelling. Agree a shared language with your host or provider. Ačiū means thank you, labas hello, and prašom can mean please or you are welcome depending on context. Keep names and addresses written down for a practical fallback.
Can I do Lithuania as a day trip from Latvia or Estonia?
Compare the actual outward and return services from Riga or Tallinn with the time you would have in Vilnius. A very short trip suits one destination rather than a country-wide route. With more time, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius can be linked over roughly ten days; journey times depend on date, operator and connection.
What food should I try?
Cepelinai (potato dumplings), šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup especially associated with summer), kibinai (Karaim pastries from Trakai), kepta duona (fried garlic rye bread) and šakotis (a tall spit-baked cake). Vilnius and Kaunas both have tasting-menu restaurants doing modern takes on these.
