Kaunas Castle and its surrounding grounds
Kaunas Castle belongs to the medieval part of the visit. The modernism route begins farther east, along Laisvės alėja.

Kaunas travel guide: modernism walk, museums and day trips

Kaunas has two distinct centres: the medieval streets around the castle and the interwar avenues and civic buildings of Naujamiestis. Walk the modernist buildings as a sequence, then choose one museum or an excursion outside the centre.

Visit durations and walking times are planning estimates. Timetables and admission rules come from the linked operators.

Plan your visit

Allow a full day for the centre, or two days with Pažaislis or the Ninth Fort. The modernism walk takes about 2-3 hours for exteriors and breaks.

Walk central Kaunas. Pažaislis lies towards the reservoir; the Ninth Fort is beyond the northwestern suburbs. They need separate journeys.

What to see

Former Central Post Office

At Laisvės alėja 102, the rounded windows and substantial street façade introduce interwar civic architecture. Start here, allowing 10-15 minutes outside; do not assume the former postal interior is open for an unbooked visit.

Official visitor information

Vytautas the Great War Museum and Čiurlionis Museum

The paired museum buildings and their setting show the ambitions of the provisional capital. Choose the War Museum for military history, or Čiurlionis for the artist-composer’s paintings and musical context. Allow 1.5-2 hours for one museum.

Official visitor information

Officers’ Club and Christ’s Resurrection Basilica

The Officers’ Club at A. Mickevičiaus 19 is another named interwar stop. Continue uphill to the monumental basilica for its large modernist form and city views; allow 30-45 minutes there, with extra time for the climb and any terrace admission.

Official visitor information

Kaunas Castle

The surviving tower presents castle history near the confluence. Allow 45-60 minutes for the museum and another half-hour for Town Hall Square and the surrounding streets.

Official visitor information

Ninth Fort

Fortifications, prison history, Holocaust exhibits and the memorial make this a substantial, sombre visit. Allow 2-3 hours on site. Underground defensive galleries require a staff-led tour; they are not part of an independent walk.

Official visitor information

Pažaislis

The monastery’s Baroque church, decoration and ensemble offer a different period of architecture beside the reservoir. Set aside about 1.5-2 hours on site, plus travel, rather than squeezing it into the city walk.

The modernism route

Walk from the former Post Office to the War Museum and Čiurlionis Museum, then the Officers’ Club and the Resurrection Basilica. Laisvės alėja provides a lunch or coffee break between stops. Use the numbered map route above for the order of stops; the current Kaunas IN publications directory is a starting point for longer walks.

Funiculars and the hill

For the Žaliakalnis section, use the uphill walking route or a taxi to the basilica. Do not rely on the Žaliakalnis funicular without confirming that it is operating for your visit. Aleksotas is a separate ride across the Nemunas, at Amerikos Lietuvių Street 6. Its operator publishes daily hours of 07:00-19:00, with a 12:00-13:00 lunch break. It does not take you to Žaliakalnis.

Pažaislis transport

For Pažaislis, the venue’s arrival instructions list trolleybuses 5, 9 and 12 to Kauno marios, followed by about 600 m on foot. Use the Kaunas journey planner for a departure from your location. A taxi to the monastery avoids the final walk.

Ninth Fort transport

Use the museum’s arrival guide to choose the actual stop: Kauno IX forto muziejus, Devintas fortas or 9-ojo forto muziejus serve different approaches. From the Vandžiogalos Street stop near ŠILAS, use the underground passage at the highway. Drivers follow IX fortas signs from the western bypass; a taxi can take you to the museum entrance.

Rain or limited mobility

In rain, keep the central route short and spend the afternoon in one museum. With limited walking, combine the Post Office exterior, Laisvės alėja and a museum, then use a taxi for the hill. Ask about museum lifts and the precise tour route before booking underground fort visits.
