How to get there
Take an intercity bus from Vilnius bus station or an LTG Link train from Vilnius railway station to Trakai. Check departures and the last return for your travel date; do not use Vilnius city bus route 35. Allow time to walk from the arrival stop to the Island Castle. Drivers should check current parking rules before setting out.
What to see and eat
The Island Castle, begun in the 14th century and completed in the 15th, sits on a small island in Lake Galvė, reached on foot across two wooden footbridges. The Island Castle museum covers Grand Duchy history; adult admission varies by season, so check the current ticket table below. Užutrakis Manor lies on the north-eastern shore of Lake Galvė. Add it as a separate excursion around the lake, allowing time for the journey. Lunch on kibinai - Karaim lamb pastries - at one of the family bakeries on Karaimų street.
How long to allow
Half a day is enough for the castle, a lakeside walk and a kibinai stop. Leave Vilnius mid-morning and be back by mid-afternoon, or extend with a boat trip on Lake Galvė and dinner at a lakeside restaurant. Trakai is genuinely quiet after the late-afternoon coach groups leave - worth the late return if you want a calmer impression.
Castle ticket and return journey
Trakai Island Castle adult admission is €14 from April through September and €12 from October through March. Concessions, opening days and hours differ. These prices were checked on 30 September 2026; confirm them before buying.

Train, bus, tour or car?
Public transport is fine for most visitors: choose the train if the timetable works and the bus if you want more departures. A guided tour is useful when you only have one spare afternoon or want castle history explained. Driving gives the most flexibility for Užutrakis Manor, lake viewpoints and a later return.
A simple walking route
Start at the bus or train stop, walk towards Karaimų street, cross the footbridges to the Island Castle, then continue along the lakefront for photographs. A short boat trip can extend the town walk. Visiting Užutrakis Manor requires a separate journey around Lake Galvė; allow time for that before returning for kibinai.
Season and weather tips
Summer is best for boats, lake views and terraces, but it is also the busiest. Spring and autumn are quieter and better for photography. In winter, keep the visit shorter, check paths around the lake and use cafés or the castle museum as warm-up stops.
